Sussex History Day – a day conference exploring local and national history
The proposals for a combined authority for Sussex reconnects the whole of the old county. So, to shape our future do we need to understand our past?
The morning session will explore Sussex life at a time of urbanisation, religious, technological and cultural change between the 16th and 18th centuries. The afternoon session invites two award-winning authors to provide national and international historical perspectives.
Morning session 10am
- Mapping Sussex: Professor Clive Webb, Sussex University
- Living in Early Modern Chichester: Dr Caroline Adams – Archivist and Historian
- Stories of himself – A Sussex gentleman in time and space: Dr Danae Tankard Chichester University
- Tudor Sussex: Professors Matt Dimmock and Andrew Hadfield of Sussex University
- Citizen history of Old Shoreham: Friends of Old Shoreham
Afternoon session 2pm
Sathnam Sanghera – will talk with Clive Webb about the impact of British Imperialism at home and abroad, based on his two best-selling books Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain and Empireworld: How British Imperialism Has Shaped The Globe, followed by Q&A.
Concluding Panel. Close 5pm.
