Flash Fiction, broadly speaking, is a story told in under one thousand words. Sometimes as few as six. This diminutive literary form, far from being restrictive, encourages authors to explore the possibilities of language, narrative and structure. Small in stature flash stories may be quick to read, but more often than not they are tales that leave you thinking, that you savour for years to come. They are similar to poems in this respect.

In this two-hour workshop Anika Carpenter will discuss the story telling possibilities that flash fiction offers, introduce some of the various styles and share examples of well-loved pieces of flash fiction.

There will be plenty of writing time too, with exercises designed especially for those interested in experimenting with this playful, rebellious and increasingly popular genre. There will be also time to read out your work at the end, as well as the opportunity to come to the Wordfest Open Mic and Slam later on Sunday at 7.30pm
