Shoreham Wordfest: Shackleton, The Man and the Myths: Michael Smith
October 5, 2024 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Sir Ernest Shackleton, who lived in Eastbourne, became a national icon after venturing on four epic voyages of discovery to the Antarctic a century ago, including the famous Endurance expedition. Polar historian Michael Smith recalls the compelling story of a complex and charismatic man who touched greatness on the ice but struggled to come to terms with home life. The recent discovery of his sunken ship Endurance beneath the Antarctic ice coincides with the 150th anniversary of his birth. Michael’s book Shackleton – By Endurance We Conquer has received considerable critical acclaim and he is assisting with the development of a major international film about his life.

Michael’s book and other related titles will be available at the event from the Wordfest/City Books bookstall or from Chapter 34 Shoreham
