SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Politics: A Survivor's Guide. Rafael Behr
DESCRIPTION:How to stay engaged without getting enraged. In conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nHave you ever turned away from the news in despair? Or do you sometimes scroll through social media and come away angry\, frustrated and listless? This is a book about the toxic atmosphere of modern politics that makes it sometimes hard to breathe; the damage it does to democracy… and the antidote. \nWe live in an age of fury and confusion. A new catastrophe erupts before the last one has finished: financial crises\, Brexit\, pandemic\, the war in Ukraine and energy shortages. Prime Ministers come and go but politics stays divided and toxic. It is tempting to switch off the news\, tune out and hope things will get back to normal. Except\, this is the new normal\, and our democracy can only work if enough people stay engaged without getting enraged. But how? \nTo answer that question\, award-winning journalist Rafael Behr takes the reader on a personal journey from despair at the state of politics to hope that there is a better way of doing things\, with insights drawn from three decades as a political commentator and foreign correspondent.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - T.S Eliot's The Waste Land: Professor Pamela Thurschwell
DESCRIPTION:Professor of Modern and Contemporary Literature\, University of Sussex\nT.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land\, originally published in 1922\, is widely regarded as one of the most important poems of the twentieth century – but it can also be a really hard read. It appears to ask the reader to come to it knowing a lot about ancient and modern languages\, the history of English literature\, the Bible\, and classical mythology\, just to name a few topics the poem references. \nIn this talk\, Professor Thurschwell hopes to convince you that it is possible to read The Waste Land without a classical education. She will argue that the poem is really about what the title says it is about – waste – the waste products that Eliot sees engulfing the society of the early twentieth century\, and waste in terms of history\, including what gets left behind and forgotten.  She believes it is possible to extract meaning from The Waste Land\, without having to take a crash course in Latin. In the course of the lecture Pamela will also touch on the place of footnotes\, typists\, and bad relationships in one of the twentieth century’s most enduring and frustrating Modernist masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest-Let the Light Pour In: Lemn Sissay
DESCRIPTION:Lemn will read from his new poetry collection followed by Q&A\nLemn Sissay OBE is a poet playwright\, memoirist performer and broadcaster. We are thrilled to be one of the first festivals where he will present his new poetry collection\, Let the Light Pour In\, followed by a question-and-answer session. Lemn will stay on for a book signing afterwards. \nFor the past decade\, Lemn Sissay has composed a short poem as dawn breaks each morning. Life-affirming\, witty and full of wonder\, these poems chronicle his own battle with the darkness and are fuelled with resilience and defiant joy. Let the Light Pour In is a collection of the best of these poems\, and a book celebrating his morning practice. \nLemn’s poetry has won many awards.  In 2019 he was awarded The Pen Pinter Prize for his best-selling memoir My name Is Why in which he reflected on his childhood\, self-expression and Britishness\, and in doing so\, explored the institutional care system\, race\, family and the meaning of home. In 2015 he brought a legal case against the government for critical mistakes in the first eighteen years of his life. \nHe has written and produced plays\, produced television documentaries and combined music and poetry.  He is currently presenting a radio show on BBC Radio 4’s Lemn Sissay’s Social Enterprise. \nLemn was named MBE for services to literature by The Queen in 2014.  In 2021 he was named OBE for services to Literature and Charity.  He is Visiting Fellow at Jesus College Cambridge and has several honorary doctorates.  He champions education and artistic opportunities\, particularly for children in care and young care leavers. He is artistic advisor to The Manchester International festival and was the Guest Director of Brighton Festival 2020 and 2021.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Footmarks: The Archaeology of Movement by Jim Leary
DESCRIPTION:Archaeologist Jim Leary reanimates the past in his new book with this riveting archaeology of movement.  All too often we think of the past as static\, frozen in time\, and indeed movement is not always easy to decipher from the archaeological record. With Jim Leary’s expert eye\, we explore the tangible remains\, from fossilised footprint tracks to prehistoric wooden trackways\, ridgeways\, holloways\, droveways\, green ways\, corpse roads\, and Roman roads. \nIsotope studies and archaeogenetics now allow us to see the arduous journeys that people made across continents and oceans\, proving that migration has been continuous throughout our past\, an endless ebb and flow of populations. This new story of our past shows that history was warm and full of life\, and no doubt at times cold\, dark and miserable – but it was never motionless. Footmarks will make you look at the landscape around you with fresh eyes. \nDr Jim Leary is an archaeologist at the University of York and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He has directed major excavations across Britain\, including Silbury Hill in Wiltshire\, the largest Neolithic monument in Europe. A passionate walker\, much of his research is centred on the way people moved around in the past.  He will sign books after his talk.
