SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - The Global Fragmented Order: Baroness Catherine Ashton
DESCRIPTION:The global fragmented order: Baroness Catherine Ashton \nIn conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nSince the invasion of Ukraine\, and then the election of Donald Trump\, the global international order has been turned on its head. We now have four major global players – the USA\, Russia\, China and the European Union – all\, apparently\, out-of-sync. The big question is what are the prospects of achieving some sort of balanced new world order? And what about the other flashpoints – Gaza\, Kashmir\, Sudan etc – how will this new dispensation deal with these ongoing crises? As Cathy Ashton was the EU’s High Commissioner for International Affairs\, few are in a better position to assess where the world is now and where it might be heading. \nTickets are £14 or £22 to include the earlier talk by Peter Kellner. \nTickets from: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Peter Kellner: The UK's fragmented political landscape.
DESCRIPTION:The UK’s fragmented political landscape: Peter Kellner \nIn conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nPollsters now agree that since the recent general and local elections\, British Politics has fragmented in an unprecedented way. We now have five parties (six in Wales and Scotland) that can reasonably compete for most seats. Is this fragmentation now a permanent aspect of the UK’s politics and if so\, what are its implications? One of the UK’s leading pollsters\, Peter Kellner\, a former president of YouGov\, will discuss this new political landscape and also address a related but important question – does this new ecology make life easier or more difficult for pollsters? \nTickets are £14 or £22 to include the ensuing talk with Baroness Catherine Ashton \nTickets can be bought from: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - The Mayor of Casterbridge – a musical interpretation
DESCRIPTION:The Mayor of Casterbridge – a musical interpretation. \nPerformed by Shoreham Singers-by-Sea\, written and conducted by Mike Hatchard \nAs a fitting literary and musical start to our annual festival\, our community choir and their conductor Mike Hatchard will perform a musical inspired by Thomas Hardy’s most celebrated novel: The Mayor of Casterbridge. \nThe musical was first written by Mike for the Ad Hoc Musical Society and performed at the Norcott Theatre\, The Secombe Centre and the Edinburgh Festival (George Square Theatre) receiving glowing reviews and making the finals of the Vivien Ellis Prize. Following their successful recent concerts\, including a tribute to their founder\, Herbie Flowers\, the choir is looking forward to this exciting new venture. \nThe performance will be accompanied by top-class musicians and tells the tragic tale of the rise and fall of Michael Henchard: “The Life and Death of a Man of Character.” Although based in Hardy’s fictional Wessex rather than Sussex there is a local connection; the book was turned into one of the earliest silent movies and was filmed in Shoreham with Thomas Hardy’s approval and collaboration – more information on this here: \nhttps://www.brightonhistory.org.uk/film/films/films_made_in_shoreham.html \nTickets are £15/10 U19 or low income (benefits or pension credit) and available from www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest: Tiptree - No-One Else's Damn But My Own
DESCRIPTION:A play performed and written by Jenny Rowe \nJames Tiptree Jr. was known as a CIA official\, an international traveller and an “ineluctably masculine” writer of science fiction. But in 1976\, he was ‘outed’ as Alice B Sheldon\, a 61-year-old woman from Virginia who had to face the repercussions to her life and career. \nA life full of boundary-breaking\, brilliance and experimentation\, she struggled with depression\, gender barriers and sexuality; some found her frustrating and difficult\, but many more loved her. She became great friends with other eminent writers\, including – Ursula K LeGuin\, Frederick Pohl\, Anne McCaffrey and Joanna Russ. \nShe won the Hugo\, Nebula\, Jupiter and World Fantasy Awards and had an award named after her – the James Tiptree Jr. Award (now called ‘Otherwise’) – for works of fiction that explore gender. \nPlaywright Jen Rowe grew up in the jam-making village of Tiptree. She was bemused to find an American writer of the same name\, and delighted to find ‘he’ wrote Sci-Fi. Her one woman play ‘No-One Else’s Damn Secret But My Own’ is a culmination of 6-years research and a visit to Alice Sheldon’s Chicago childhood home. \n£10 – £13 \nTICKETS: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on \nBlack Flamingo Store BN43 5WA \nShoreham Markets Aug 24th\, Sep 14 & 28

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest: Behind the Privet Hedge: Michael Gilson in conversation with Elise Sargent
DESCRIPTION:Britain is a nation of gardeners; the suburban garden\, with its roses and privet hedges\, is widely admired and copied across the world. But it is little understood how millions across the nation developed an obsession with their colourful plots of land. \nMichael Gilson’s new book\, Behind the Privet Hedge\, explores the history of this development and how\, despite their stereotype as symbols of dull\, middle-class conformity\, these new open spaces were seen as a means to bring about social change in the early twentieth century. He restores to the story a remarkable but long-forgotten figure\, Richard Sudell\, who spent a lifetime ‘evangelizing’ that the garden be in the vanguard of progress towards a new egalitarian society with everyday beauty at its centre. \nMichael Gilson is an award-winning editor\, journalist and Associate Fellow at the University of Sussex. Elise Sargent is the Features Editor of Garden Answers\, one of the UK’s best-selling gardening magazines. \nMike’s book will be available at the event from the Wordfest/City Books bookstall or Chapter 34 Shoreham \n£10 \nTICKETS: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on \nBlack Flamingo Store BN43 5WA \nShoreham Markets Aug 24th\, Sep 14 & 28

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest: An introduction to Flash Fiction with Anika Carpenter
DESCRIPTION:Flash Fiction\, broadly speaking\, is a story told in under one thousand words. Sometimes as few as six. This diminutive literary form\, far from being restrictive\, encourages authors to explore the possibilities of language\, narrative and structure. Small in stature flash stories may be quick to read\, but more often than not they are tales that leave you thinking\, that you savour for years to come. They are similar to poems in this respect. \nIn this two-hour workshop Anika Carpenter will discuss the story telling possibilities that flash fiction offers\, introduce some of the various styles and share examples of well-loved pieces of flash fiction. \nThere will be plenty of writing time too\, with exercises designed especially for those interested in experimenting with this playful\, rebellious and increasingly popular genre. There will be also time to read out your work at the end\, as well as the opportunity to come to the Wordfest Open Mic and Slam later on Sunday at 7.30pm \n£15 – £20 \nTICKETS: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on \nBlack Flamingo Store BN43 5WA \nShoreham Markets Aug 24th\, Sep 14 & 28
