SUMMARY:U3A Friday Event - Captain Robert FitzRoy\, Charles Darwin and the Voyages of HMS Beagle
DESCRIPTION:Captain Robert FitzRoy\, Charles Darwin and the Voyages of HMS Beagle\nA presentation by Dr James Taylor.\nRobert FitzRoy became captain of HMS Beagle during her first voyage to South America from 1826 to 1830. This led to the second global voyage in 1831 with FitzRoy selecting Charles Darwin as his shipboard naturalist and the collection of evidence for his publication On the Origin of Species. \nFitzRoy paid for two artists\, Augustus Earle and Conrad Martens\, to paint the people and places encountered\, and these images underpin the seafaring stories. This talk also focuses on the family and influences on FitzRoy and Darwin. \nAbout our speaker \nDr James Taylor is a former curator of pictures at the National Maritime Museum\, Greenwich and author of ‘The Voyage of the Beagle – Darwin’s extraordinary adventure aboard FitzRoy’s famous survey ship’ (2008). \nVenue: Shoreham Centre: Main Hall \nCost: Members: FREE | Non-members £4 (including refreshments) \nEmail: info@shorehamandsouthwicku3a.org.uk \nWebsite:  https://shoreham-southwick.u3asite.uk

SUMMARY:Still Dancing - Stories about Women's Successes and Struggles - Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Bluebells\, Tiller Girls and Richard Gere! \n\nMargaret travelled on her own across Africa at eight years old.\nMiranda was a Bluebell Girl.\nRichard Gere threw Jacquie-Ann over his shoulder!\n\nand many more stories … \nWhen Jennie Chapman joined a Dancercise class at the Shoreham Centre 4 years ago\, she had no idea her fellow dancers would have such remarkable life stories to share. \nSo inspired was Jennie by their tales that she decided to bring them together in a book — stories of women’s triumphs and challenges spanning decades\, from before the Second World War to today\, all connected through a love of music and dance. (Each chapter\, in fact\, takes its title from a song.) \nThis is a free event\, with refreshments and nibbles provided. Everyone is warmly invited to come along\, mingle\, and share stories while enjoying music and a film display of photographs from the era — many of which didn’t make it into the book. You’ll also be able to see rare footage from one of the group\, Sheila\, who had her own chat show in the 1950s that drew an incredible 11 million viewers. \nYou don’t have to be a TV star to attend! As Jennie says\, the book is “really about all women over the last hundred years.” Come for the company\, stay for the stories — and join in the craic. \nIf you have any queries Jennie can be contacted on the email below.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - The Global Fragmented Order: Baroness Catherine Ashton
DESCRIPTION:The global fragmented order: Baroness Catherine Ashton \nIn conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nSince the invasion of Ukraine\, and then the election of Donald Trump\, the global international order has been turned on its head. We now have four major global players – the USA\, Russia\, China and the European Union – all\, apparently\, out-of-sync. The big question is what are the prospects of achieving some sort of balanced new world order? And what about the other flashpoints – Gaza\, Kashmir\, Sudan etc – how will this new dispensation deal with these ongoing crises? As Cathy Ashton was the EU’s High Commissioner for International Affairs\, few are in a better position to assess where the world is now and where it might be heading. \nTickets are £14 or £22 to include the earlier talk by Peter Kellner. \nTickets from: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Peter Kellner: The UK's fragmented political landscape.
DESCRIPTION:The UK’s fragmented political landscape: Peter Kellner \nIn conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nPollsters now agree that since the recent general and local elections\, British Politics has fragmented in an unprecedented way. We now have five parties (six in Wales and Scotland) that can reasonably compete for most seats. Is this fragmentation now a permanent aspect of the UK’s politics and if so\, what are its implications? One of the UK’s leading pollsters\, Peter Kellner\, a former president of YouGov\, will discuss this new political landscape and also address a related but important question – does this new ecology make life easier or more difficult for pollsters? \nTickets are £14 or £22 to include the ensuing talk with Baroness Catherine Ashton \nTickets can be bought from: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - The Mayor of Casterbridge – a musical interpretation
DESCRIPTION:The Mayor of Casterbridge – a musical interpretation. \nPerformed by Shoreham Singers-by-Sea\, written and conducted by Mike Hatchard \nAs a fitting literary and musical start to our annual festival\, our community choir and their conductor Mike Hatchard will perform a musical inspired by Thomas Hardy’s most celebrated novel: The Mayor of Casterbridge. \nThe musical was first written by Mike for the Ad Hoc Musical Society and performed at the Norcott Theatre\, The Secombe Centre and the Edinburgh Festival (George Square Theatre) receiving glowing reviews and making the finals of the Vivien Ellis Prize. Following their successful recent concerts\, including a tribute to their founder\, Herbie Flowers\, the choir is looking forward to this exciting new venture. \nThe performance will be accompanied by top-class musicians and tells the tragic tale of the rise and fall of Michael Henchard: “The Life and Death of a Man of Character.” Although based in Hardy’s fictional Wessex rather than Sussex there is a local connection; the book was turned into one of the earliest silent movies and was filmed in Shoreham with Thomas Hardy’s approval and collaboration – more information on this here: \nhttps://www.brightonhistory.org.uk/film/films/films_made_in_shoreham.html \nTickets are £15/10 U19 or low income (benefits or pension credit) and available from www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on
