SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Peter Kellner: The UK's fragmented political landscape.
DESCRIPTION:The UK’s fragmented political landscape: Peter Kellner \nIn conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nPollsters now agree that since the recent general and local elections\, British Politics has fragmented in an unprecedented way. We now have five parties (six in Wales and Scotland) that can reasonably compete for most seats. Is this fragmentation now a permanent aspect of the UK’s politics and if so\, what are its implications? One of the UK’s leading pollsters\, Peter Kellner\, a former president of YouGov\, will discuss this new political landscape and also address a related but important question – does this new ecology make life easier or more difficult for pollsters? \nTickets are £14 or £22 to include the ensuing talk with Baroness Catherine Ashton \nTickets can be bought from: www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - The Mayor of Casterbridge – a musical interpretation
DESCRIPTION:The Mayor of Casterbridge – a musical interpretation. \nPerformed by Shoreham Singers-by-Sea\, written and conducted by Mike Hatchard \nAs a fitting literary and musical start to our annual festival\, our community choir and their conductor Mike Hatchard will perform a musical inspired by Thomas Hardy’s most celebrated novel: The Mayor of Casterbridge. \nThe musical was first written by Mike for the Ad Hoc Musical Society and performed at the Norcott Theatre\, The Secombe Centre and the Edinburgh Festival (George Square Theatre) receiving glowing reviews and making the finals of the Vivien Ellis Prize. Following their successful recent concerts\, including a tribute to their founder\, Herbie Flowers\, the choir is looking forward to this exciting new venture. \nThe performance will be accompanied by top-class musicians and tells the tragic tale of the rise and fall of Michael Henchard: “The Life and Death of a Man of Character.” Although based in Hardy’s fictional Wessex rather than Sussex there is a local connection; the book was turned into one of the earliest silent movies and was filmed in Shoreham with Thomas Hardy’s approval and collaboration – more information on this here: \nhttps://www.brightonhistory.org.uk/film/films/films_made_in_shoreham.html \nTickets are £15/10 U19 or low income (benefits or pension credit) and available from www.shorehamwordfest.com/whats-on

SUMMARY:Liz Tait Productions "Who Do They Think They Are?"
DESCRIPTION:Liz Tait Productions present ‘Who Do They Think They Are?” \nA reunion to remember. A past to forget…. \nPast and present collide in this all-female comedy drama that centres around four former college\nfriends who reunite at a Spice Girls-themed dance workshop. Old resentments resurface as they\nattempt to boogie their troubles away. As the reunion descends into chaos\, realisation dawns that the\nday is less about learning a dance routine and more about the power of friendship\, the consequences\nof choice and the courage to embrace their authentic selves. A story of the joy of friendship and\ndance and the cathartic nature of letting go of the past. \nThis joyful show celebrates too often invisible\, middle-aged women and the benefits of dance in\npromoting a good quality of life\, improved fitness and self-image. \nFollowing sold-out debut shows at Chichester Fringe\, Worthing Festival and Lambeth Fringe for their\nproduction last year\, ‘A Different Song’\, Sussex-based LT Productions return this September with the\npremiere of their new show by award-winning writer / director\, Liz Tait. \nThe four-strong\, Brighton-based cast are: Helen Rogers (Pippa)\, Kate Peltzer Dunn (Marion)\, Sally\nBest (Sarah) and Sophie Dearlove (Kim). \nReviews for ‘A Different Song’:\n“Liz Tait’s writing is real and fresh and grounded\, acutely observed and relatable”\nBrighton Source Magazine.\n“A charming and touching piece\, well-worth a visit!” Playstosee.com\nArgus Angel winner / FringeReview Teapot Winner / FringeGuru Reviewers Choice. \nPerformance times:  3pm and 7.30pm  (doors open 30 minutes before) \nTickets are £12 or £10 (Early Bird Saver – Shoreham only) on URL below or scan QR code

SUMMARY:U3A Monthly Friday Event - Birds of the Adur Estuary
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Richard Allan from the Shoreham District Ornithological Society. \nRichard’s talk is about the birds that rely on the protected environment of the Adur Estuary\, and the pressure this habitat and its wildlife and fauna face today. Hear about how the changing seasons bring different birds to this natural gem within our midst and where and how you can better appreciate it. \nRichard says “The Adur Estuary is a very special place – a protected but fragile habitat that is home to a wide variety of birds at various times of the year. Come and hear about the birds that spend their winter holidays feeding on the Estuary\, and the other species that use it like a service station\, to rest and refuel\, on their mega migration journeys to and from their northerly breeding grounds.” \nVenue: Shoreham Centre Main Hall\nTime:   2-3.30pm\nCost: Members £2.00. SUMMARY:Mike Hatchard's Jazz Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:The group that calls itself “Afternoon in Paris” performs morning\, noon and night – whenever an audience is keen to hear them. Their style and repertoire are inspired by the Hot Club of France of the 1930s and 40s with Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. \nSwing\, Latin\, gypsy jazz and blues and usually an infectious rhythm are the characteristics with virtuoso musicianship. \nSusanna Warren is a striking performer – vocals\, saxes\, and bass clarinet whose talent is firmly based on her classical training in the UK and Hungary. She started performing jazz in the UK and around the world in 2007. \nJeremy Young\, alongside his career as a successful rock musician\, fell in love with and studied the Manouche gypsy jazz style of rhythm and picking style. He is a truly impressive guitarist who has played across the UK and in Denmark\, Poland\, Ireland\, Germany and France. \nMike Hatchard is an outstanding keyboard player\, composer\, arranger known to thousands of people along the south coast who have come to his jazz and classical gigs and legendary “Jazz Breakfasts”. \nWHEN Sunday 1st June 11.00am till 1.00pm \nVENUE Here in the Queen Elizabeth Room\, upstairs in the Shoreham Centre. LIFT AND WHEELCHAIR ACCESS available. \nTICKETS include a tea or coffee and a pastry and there is no online booking fee. £15.00.\nStudents £8.00 from www.wegottickets.com \nAlternatively phone Lindsay on 07855 693 356 to reserve tickets. \nParking on west side of Shoreham Centre building and nearby. Shoreham car parks £1.00 all day on Sundays.
