SUMMARY:Minds Matter Variety Show
DESCRIPTION:“Minds Matter are very excited to announce their debut variety show\, taking place on Friday 17th March 2023 at the Shoreham Centre. This show will be raising money in aid of Heads On and all proceeds of the event will be going to the charity. \nHeads On are the NHS Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust charity who raise money for local mental health services. Mental health is abundantly prevalent in our society so Minds Matter wanted to host an event that raised awareness around these ongoing issues. \nThe show will have performances from a live band (The Empty Seats)\, a pop singer (Rachel)\, Dancers (Diverse Dance Works)\, a local sea shanty band (The Wellington Wailers) and a comedian (Hasan Al-Habib). The majority of these acts are local to Sussex so we are hoping to raise awareness and bring a sense of community. \nThere will also be a speech from Brooke Lowther who has lived with mental illness the majority of her life and also a prize draw for audience members. Tickets are on sale now and just £11. Visit www.mindsmatterevent.com for more information on the show and how to purchase tickets”

SUMMARY:Ropetackle Event: 'Follow the Money' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Tackle the Issues* \nPaul Johnson\, Director for the Institute for Fiscal Studies\, introduces his new book launch of “Follow The Money – How Much Does Britain Cost?” . \nWhat is the truth about Britain’s finances? Join us at this important literary event\, featuring Paul Johnson and Professor Sasha Roseneil. \nRopetackle Arts Centre is delighted to announce the visit on 24th February of Paul Johnson\, Director of the Institute of Fiscal Studies and one of the country’s leading economists\, to mark the publication (on 23rd February) of his book “Follow the Money” – his forensic examination of the way the state raises and spends £1 trillion of our money every year. \nPaul will show how bad politics has resulted in damaging policy decisions\, why taxes are rising to unprecedented levels\, and how we have neglected the young for too long. \nHe will also challenge us to recognise that there are no easy solutions and that we\, the electorate\, need to support politicians in making tough choices\, and the trade-offs that are the inevitable\, if rarely acknowledged\, prerequisite for good policy-making. \nPaul will be interviewed by Professor Sasha Roseneil\, Vice-Chancellor of Sussex University. Before her Sussex appointment in August 2022\, Professor Roseneil held posts as UCL’s first Pro-Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences\, and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Essex. \nPaul was brought up in Shoreham and attended King’s Manor School (now Shoreham Academy) and always draws a sell-out crowd at Ropetackle. The book\, published by Abacus at Hatchett UK\, will be in book shops from Saturday 25th March: however our partner\, City Books\, will be selling copies on the night\, which Paul will sign after the event. \nWhat they are saying about “Follow the Money”: \nLaura Kuenssberg \nRead it\, absorb it\, and understand how the country works. \nRobert Peston \nThis is an important book by the economist who has set the terms of so much political debate over the past decade. If you want to understand why crazy politics routinely trumps economic rationality in government choices\, read this. \nPolly Toynbee \nFire and passion\, combined with the facts. Every politician should get a copy\, as the tales of short-sighted\, election-fixated\, cowardly decision-making are so depressing. And your way forward looks so blindingly sensible. \n  \n*Tackle the issues is a series of joint Ropetackle\, Wordfest and Sussex University events addressing important issues of our time.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Society Talk-'Our Disappearing Public Hards'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk on Friday 17th February by popular local author and campaigner\, Kim Matthews\, about the past history and current risks to Shoreham’s public hards. \nKim will explore the origins of these ancient rights of way and how a thriving harbour community used them commercially or for leisure right up until the recent past. But now they are threatened by development\, sea defence walls and neglect. Kim’s talk will focus on what can be done to preserve them if we act now.
