SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - My Policeman and other writings
DESCRIPTION:In conversation with Beth Miller \n*A combined ticket for both Sunday talks is £15 \nBethan Roberts is an award-winning novelist\, short-story writer\, radio and tv and script writer.  She has written five novels and also writes drama for BBC Radio 4. Her novels are often inspired by the lives of real people and by real places.  My Policeman was inspired by E.M.Forster and his policeman lover. The story was recently adapted for film and became a major success\, starring Harry Styles and filmed in many familiar local settings in and around Brighton. \nBethan’s novel The Good Plain Cook was inspired by the eccentric art collector Peggy Guggenheim and was serialised as BBC Radio 4’s book at bedtime. A radio play My Own Private Gondolier\, broadcast in 2010 and starring Fiona Shaw\, also explored the relationship between Peggy Guggenheim and her artist daughter\, Pegeen. \nBethan’s first novel The Pools\, was set in the shadow of the massive power station near which she grew up. Mother Island is partly set on the island of Anglesey\, where her father was raised and her most recent novel\, Graceland\, is based on the life of Elvis Presley. She has taught creative writing for the Open University\, the University of Chichester and at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, and has worked on television documentaries. Bethan lives in Brighton with her family. \nBethan will talk with Beth Miller about her writing career\, her inspirations and future plans.  There will be time for questions and discussion with the audience and a book signing after the talk. \nBeth Miller has published six novels.  The Woman Who Came Back to Life\, her most recent book\, was published in January 2022. She has also published two non-fiction books\, one about The Archers and another on her love of Shakespeare.  Beth is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the University of Brighton. She also teaches creative writing and works as a one-to-one book coach for people at all stages of their writing.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - The Green Lady: A novel by Sally Bayley
DESCRIPTION:From the critically acclaimed author Sally Bayley\, The Green Lady is a poignant\, brilliant exploration of the relationships between children and their teachers. \nIn the style of her memoir Girl with Dove\, this book explores a child’s search for artistic education and a sense of self. Lyrical and playful\, Sally Bayley’s writing transports the reader into an eccentric world of teachers\, guardians and guiding spirits of place. \nMoved by her female teachers\, and guided by the artist J.M.W. Turner\, Bayley’s protagonist goes in search of her maternal ancestors\, in particular her grandmother\, Edna May Turner. Following the narratives of other women in history who have taken different routes to independence and artistic freedom – including the educational suffragist Mary Neal\, actress Margaret Rutherford\, and poet Stevie Smith – Bayley considers the paths to happiness and the limitations social convention imposes. \nPart novel\, part memoir\, The Green Lady continues the traditions of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando as an imagined biography which urgently understands the need for a space of one’s own in which to thrive. As one of the book’s several foster children\, Bayley reminds us that families and homes can be found and built within literature and the arts as well as nature’s green spaces. \n“No-one writes quite like Bayley – she is a true\, precious individual.”  Caroline Sanderson\, Editor of The Bookseller.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Politics: A Survivor's Guide. Rafael Behr
DESCRIPTION:How to stay engaged without getting enraged. In conversation with Professor Ivor Gaber \nHave you ever turned away from the news in despair? Or do you sometimes scroll through social media and come away angry\, frustrated and listless? This is a book about the toxic atmosphere of modern politics that makes it sometimes hard to breathe; the damage it does to democracy… and the antidote. \nWe live in an age of fury and confusion. A new catastrophe erupts before the last one has finished: financial crises\, Brexit\, pandemic\, the war in Ukraine and energy shortages. Prime Ministers come and go but politics stays divided and toxic. It is tempting to switch off the news\, tune out and hope things will get back to normal. Except\, this is the new normal\, and our democracy can only work if enough people stay engaged without getting enraged. But how? \nTo answer that question\, award-winning journalist Rafael Behr takes the reader on a personal journey from despair at the state of politics to hope that there is a better way of doing things\, with insights drawn from three decades as a political commentator and foreign correspondent.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - T.S Eliot's The Waste Land: Professor Pamela Thurschwell
DESCRIPTION:Professor of Modern and Contemporary Literature\, University of Sussex\nT.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land\, originally published in 1922\, is widely regarded as one of the most important poems of the twentieth century – but it can also be a really hard read. It appears to ask the reader to come to it knowing a lot about ancient and modern languages\, the history of English literature\, the Bible\, and classical mythology\, just to name a few topics the poem references. \nIn this talk\, Professor Thurschwell hopes to convince you that it is possible to read The Waste Land without a classical education. She will argue that the poem is really about what the title says it is about – waste – the waste products that Eliot sees engulfing the society of the early twentieth century\, and waste in terms of history\, including what gets left behind and forgotten.  She believes it is possible to extract meaning from The Waste Land\, without having to take a crash course in Latin. In the course of the lecture Pamela will also touch on the place of footnotes\, typists\, and bad relationships in one of the twentieth century’s most enduring and frustrating Modernist masterpieces.

SUMMARY:Shoreham Wordfest - Footmarks: The Archaeology of Movement by Jim Leary
DESCRIPTION:Archaeologist Jim Leary reanimates the past in his new book with this riveting archaeology of movement.  All too often we think of the past as static\, frozen in time\, and indeed movement is not always easy to decipher from the archaeological record. With Jim Leary’s expert eye\, we explore the tangible remains\, from fossilised footprint tracks to prehistoric wooden trackways\, ridgeways\, holloways\, droveways\, green ways\, corpse roads\, and Roman roads. \nIsotope studies and archaeogenetics now allow us to see the arduous journeys that people made across continents and oceans\, proving that migration has been continuous throughout our past\, an endless ebb and flow of populations. This new story of our past shows that history was warm and full of life\, and no doubt at times cold\, dark and miserable – but it was never motionless. Footmarks will make you look at the landscape around you with fresh eyes. \nDr Jim Leary is an archaeologist at the University of York and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He has directed major excavations across Britain\, including Silbury Hill in Wiltshire\, the largest Neolithic monument in Europe. A passionate walker\, much of his research is centred on the way people moved around in the past.  He will sign books after his talk.
